Only recently porosity of the hair start to function in the circles of bloggers, so we just started to get interested in the term. Up till now, it was known only by the hair stylists, who needed this knowledge about hair condition in their work. After all, you cannot offer the client right hair treatment if you cannot determine condition of hair.
Today hair porosity can be easily determined at home. You do not need an expensive equipment or special skills to do that. You just have to know what is porosity and how hair change along with raise of hair cuticles.
Porosity of the hair can be divided into low, medium and high. Low porosity hair are the healthiest, because cuticles are closed and no valuable substances are lost. The exact opposite of described hair are high porosity hair, that are the most damaged due to raised cuticles. Medium porosity hair are somewhere in between the mentioned porosities.
Method of determining the porosity of hair
If you keep on wondering what type of porosity have your hair, just check it. Every mean is good to find out a little bit more about your hair and to be able to match your hair with cosmetics most suitable for them.
DRYING – porosity of the hair can be determined by the time they need to dry after hair wash. Low porosity hair are difficult to wet, but once they absorb water, they will not get rid of it this easy. Cuticles are sealed, so hair dry for a long time. On the other hand, it is entirely the opposite with high porosity hair, that dry as fast as they absorb water. Open cuticles foster absorption of moisture and water vanishes of them very quickly.
STYLISATION – an attempt to curl hair and create a hair style can say much about hair as well. Low porosity hair are difficult in stylisation in spite of their condition being the best. They are not easy to curl and once you manage to do it, they straighten back. Such hair are chunky and silky smooth, so making a ban out of them is on the verge of the miracle and requires use of ultra strong hair spray. High porosity hair are easily subjected to humidity and stylisation.
APPEARANCE – another way to determine hair condition is by their appearance. Low porosity hair are smooth, glossy almost always straight, elastic and chunky. Medium porosity hair can be wavy, are more prone to falling out and look worse. Such hair are usually more dry, deprived of gloss and can experience split ends. High porosity hair are the one, that curl or are very damaged, deal with dandruff, hair loss, split ends, are matte and rough in touch.
TEST WITH A GLASS OF WATER – if you want to determine porosity of hair quickly and without long observation, you can perform this test. Take a glass of clear water and a fragment of hair. Once placed in the glass hair can behave in various ways – low porosity hair will stay on the surface, medium porosity hair will slowly sink and high porosity hair will immediately skin at the bottom of the glass. You may want to check few fragments, because hair on different lengths can have different porosity (often low porosity hair are only at roots and at ends have medium porosity).
